Recreational Program
Welcome to the Rat City Rollergirls Recreational Program! As the sport gains recognition and popularity in the Seattle area, the demand for roller derby related programs and training continues to grow as well. The Rat City Rollergirls have chosen to answer that demand with a recreational program that is dedicated to providing opportunities to maintain health and fitness while on skates without the commitment of playing roller derby competitively. Our mission is to provide a fun and safe environment for all who participate.WHO SHOULD JOIN?
The Rat City Rollergirls Recreational League is the place for anyone interested in derby-style strength and fitness, being a referee, or just working on your skating and roller derby skills. Participants must possess basic skating skills. Come in as a beginning skater, or an existing derby girl or referee from another league who wants additional rink time.
HOW IS IT STRUCTURED?
Rec League consists of two sessions per week. Sessions are 90 minutes each and led by Rat City Rollergirls.
Fit Skate: Designed for derby and non-derby skaters seeking an aerobic fitness workout with on and off skates elements. Beginner skaters who do not pose a hazard to themselves or others are welcome. Women and men are welcome at these non-contact sessions.
Scrimmage: Black & White scrimmage for skaters that are already familiar with the game, comfortable with contact and are looking for a place to just play. Track clearance is required for participants that have not passed the WFTDA Skills test within the last 12 months. Scrimmage is for women only at this time.
WHEN, WHERE, AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
All sessions are held at the Rat’s Nest in Ballard:
- Every other Monday (Scrimmage) from 6:00 – 7:30 PM
- Every other Monday (Fit Skate) from 6:00 – 7:30 PM and every Wednesday (Fit Skate) from 9:00 – 10:30 PM.
Any schedule variations will be posted through the Rat City Recreational Program Facebook Group.
The Rat City Recreational Program costs $30.00 per month. Alternately, punch cards can be purchased in 5 session increments at $5.00 per session or drop-in for $7.00 per session. Active Rat City Alumnae and Founders Club Members are entitled to discounted rates of $25.00 per month, $4 per session with a punch card, and $6.00 for drop-in.
Payments can be made in person at any Recreational Program session. We accept cash, check, debit and credit card payment.
ARE THERE GEAR REQUIREMENTS?
All participants are required to bring the following gear:
- Helmet
- Wristguards
- Knee and Elbow Pads
- Mouthguard
- Quad Roller Skates
- Athletic Attire and Shoes
- Water Bottle
- Black & White Shirt or Jersey (Scrimmage Only)
ARE THERE INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS?
Participants are required to present proof of ONE of the following types of insurance:
- Primary Health Insurance OR
- WFTDA Insurance OR
- USARS Roller Derby Insurance
