May 2011 – Mona Agony
What’s the significance of your derby name and number?
[MA] Mine’s just a name. :) I thought for sure I’d be a blocker when I started playing so wanted something that sounded a little tough, but not too un-namelike.
How did you get started playing roller derby?
[MA] I began playing when I was at a real low point, personally. I needed a community, I needed an outlet, I needed a challenge. I began skating (with Jet City) in the fall of 2007; I didn’t have any equipment so wore rental skates and mis-matched gear from the lost and found. My very first night, the head coach told me to skate across the floor and stop in front. I skated toward him but didn’t know how to stop. I got close and then threw my arms around him. He simply looked at me and shook his head, laughing. I don’t think he thought I’d make it in derby.
What is your favorite thing about skating with Rat City?
What was the last thing you ate?
[MA] Greek yogurt with honey and mango.
What is your favorite off skates workout?

February 2011 – Leeloo
What’s the significance of your derby name and number?
[L] It’s lost significance over time and just become my name. After generating about 40 possible “clever” names I decided to be simple about it. Leeloo in the 5th Element was rather a bad ass (and also hot) so I thought the name would give me something to aspire to…

January 2011 – Fighty Almighty
What’s the significance of your derby name and number? (Fighty Almighty #KO)
[FA] – I was the original Ruby Bruiseday but my love of Greek mythology out won my love of the Stones. I settled on Fighty Aphrodite but an original Texas Roller Derby skater already laid claim to Mighty Aphrodite. Since we don’t duplicate names in the community, the Almighty was suggested and it suites my general tongue-in-cheek arrogance to a T.
How did you get started playing roller derby?
[FA] – When I gave up stage acting back in 2005 I needed another physically grueling hobby that would suck up all of my time and energy and offer zero pay. Enter, stage left: Modern-Day Roller Derby. My vagabond ways have seen me skate for the San Diego Derby Dolls, the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls, the LA Derby Dolls and the Angel City Derby Girls. But I’m in Seattle for good now.
What is your favorite thing about Rat City?
[FA] – The commitment, energy and drive of each and every single member’s involvement. Roller derby isn’t just a hobby; it’s a lifestyle and Rat City Rollergirls is the living, breathing embodiment of true dedication, true athleticism and true grit. I am humbled and grateful on the daily to be part of this league.
What was the last thing you ate?
[FA] – A dry sourdough English muffin and about a gallon of Monday morning jet-fuel – French roast.
What is your favorite off-skates workout?
[FA] – My trainer, Nevrize Aydogan of Nev Fitness is five feet of Turkish delight…and torture. She has tailored my workouts with her for optimal performance on the track. And she’s easy on the eyes.

Both maintain constant speeds and travel along parallel tracks. If you were on one of those trains, what kind of refreshing beverage would you be drinking in the dining car?
[FA] – If I were on the Portland-bound train, I’d be enjoying a pint of Manny’s Pale Ale, of course! If returning to Seattle, I’m sure it’d be something from Full Sail. Yum! (Don’t tell Nev about my love of the hops, though. She’d kill me…)
