Rat City’s selectees for Rollergirl of the Month for 2009:

December 2009 – Carmen Getsome

Do you have any bout-day rituals, habits, or superstitions? If so, what are they?
[CG] – I have a pattern that I follow:
-I wake up
-eat Rice Crispies
-feed my dogs
-take a nap
-wake up
-go to taco del mar
-eat a chicken burrito (rice, chicken, cheese and hot sauce…and thats it!!!)
-go to the venue
-visualize the game
-play
-WIN!!!!!

What is your favorite off-skates workout?
[CG] – Punk Rope!  An amazing jump rope class that feels like recess!!

What was the last thing you ate?
[CG] –  Cajun Food from aligator soul….yummy!!!!

At noon, a train leaves Seattle for Portland while another train leaves Portland for Seattle. It takes one train 4 hours and the other 7 hours to make the trip. Both maintain constant speeds and travel along parallel tracks. If you were on one of those trains, what kind of refreshing beverage would you be drinking in the dining car?
[CG] –  Chocolate Milk!

Check out the the awesome things people said about Carmen Getsome:

“Her passion and enthusiasm for the sport of roller derby is an inspiration to us all.”

“She’s the bomb. I think this league relies on her a lot.”

“I vote for Carmen Getsome, because she not only is a leader and positive force on the track, but works her butt off getting the league training program up and running. She’s always ready and willing to do what it takes to get everyone motivated. She’s an outstanding member of our league!”

“Carmen does a lot for our league on the track. Sure, she’s a hot head, but that’s just passion.”

“Captaining two teams, wrangling training, AND helping to put on a fundraiser. Not to mention being an amazing skater and helping all of us with injury questions.”

November 2009 – VALTRON 3000

What’s the significance of your derby name and number?
[VT] – VALTRON 3000, it’s spacey and combines my real name into a derby name, reminiscent of Hal from 2001. The name allows me to do the robot on the start line, and the announcers have a lot of fun with it. I prefer to go by Dr. Tron.

Do you have any bout-day rituals, habits, or superstitions? If so, what are they?
[VT] – Since this is my sixth season with RCRG, I don’t get too nervous anymore. I try to sleep in, have a good breakfast, and take my dog to the dog park since she will be stuck at home alone for so long during the bout and afterparty. I like to get on the track early and get a good warm up in to make sure all my equipment is working, then we usually sit around and wait for the doors to open. Once the fans start pouring in, my energy pumps up and I’m ready to hit the floor rolling.

What was the last thing you ate?
[VT] – Goat cheese on Triscuits.

What is your favorite thing about Roller Derby?
[VT]This is the first sport I’ve ever really excelled at and it allows me to be a rockstar in front of 5,000 fans. I have met some of the most amazing people through roller derby, and I am amazed by how this sport has grown over the past six years. Plus, I like being able to knock girls down and not apologize for it.

What is your favorite off-skates workout?
[VT] – Plyometrics with Krush Limbaugh! Any group excercise where someone is pushing me to work harder, I’m always more motivated with people around me.

[VT] – Whiskey ginger.

Super sweet things said about VALTRON 3000:

“For all the great MMP work she’s done, and is STILL doing!”

“I heart her and her dedication to the league.”

“MMP is a beast, and she is a veteran who has already worked super hard in her years with the league, yet she stepped up anyway and is doing a stellar job of getting lots of people involved and making it MMP’s best year yet.”

“Kicked ass for green vs. white bout, and working overtime for MMP committee.”

“She is super at marketing and super helpful to the new people on that committee and puts in a tons of hours and is a Doctor.”

“She is one of the best skaters on Rat City, a true All-Star, she always keep calm, she’s funny, and the only person that can sport a Snugatron and Crocatrons and still look incredible. (not to talk about the black fannypack). She’s also doing a fantastic job with being the Marketing Manager and she was the one making the Green and White bout happening…”

October 2009 – Sugar N’Creamher

sw-sugar-and-creamher“She gives so much on the track and behind the scenes. She is so beautiful and sacrifices soooo much!”

“Because she is a badass, working mom, who puts in a gajillion hours into this league- hours that are the life-blood of the league, no less!”

“Sugar dove right in to dues when she started on the league, and has been going strong ever since. She’s a huge contributor to her team and tirelessly gives her time, passion, and help to the league. She’s got a great attitude, goes to lots of practices (often times with kids in tow just so she doesn’t miss out on skating) and keeps us all in check on our moolah. I heart her.”

“She is amazing and we really appreciate all her hard work!

“um she rawks, anyone who can make such well mannered and sweet kids has to be awesome!”

“She’s always so sweet and in good spirits about the ton of derby work she does.”

September 2009 – Lorna Boom, Riot Act, Moe Ya Down

“Thank you so much for the extensive hours of thoughtful consideration you have put toward this effort! Having a HOME was one thing we dreamed of from the very beginning and having that dream realized is mind boggling. Thanks you guys! I mega heart you.”

“Thank you for making dreams come true.”

“Those ladies worked hard and long to realize the dream of RCRG.”

August 2009 – Ima Handful

[IH] -  Kill Bill Vol I and Bravo Pacinos.

What is your favorite off-skates workout?
[IH] - Watching David Cronenberg movies, does that count?

What was the last thing you ate?
[IH] – A nice cold glass of seltzer water and lime.

[IH] – A nice cold glass of seltzer water and lime.

Ima Handful is our August Rollergirl of the Month! Never without a smile and a helping hand, Ima is always there for her fellow rollergirls. Some lovely things said about Miss Handful:

“She’s Pretty”

“She’s so positive, smart and funny! She works hard on and off the rink and gives a sh*t about everyone. She was super helpful in Denver to the Travel team and her family was just as awesome as her!”

“I heart IMA!!!” Congrats, Ima!

July 2009 – Sara Problem?

What’s the significance of your derby name and number?
[SP] - My name is from a line in the movie Short Bus by the great John Cameron Mitchell. My number is the age that the league coach thought I was at the time I was drafted.  He was pretty far off the mark.

Do you have any bout-day rituals, habits, or superstitions? If so, what are they?
[SP] – Breakfast with my derby wives. I always have to find my parents int he crowd so that I know everything will be okay.

What is your favorite off-skates workout?
[SP] – Spinning.

What was the last thing you ate?
[SP] – General Tsao’s Chicken and Honey Walnut Prawns, which is pretty unusual for me.

[SP] – The one you buy for me.

June 2009 – Sister Piston

“There are those of us who work out in the open where everybody knows what we do and there are those who work tirelessly behind the scenes making sure that the systems we use everyday are operating so we can do are jobs no matter what they are. … Aside from being a key player in the website remodel and launch, Piston was also a part of the forum migration which happened earlier this year. I was astounded that the switch of forums went virtually without any noticeable hiccups. If you have ever migrated data or launched new software you can certainly appreciate this event. If you haven’t then think of it this way, it was like putting on a new pair of skates and not having to break them in. … Piston is constantly monitoring our forum and has already logged over 308 hours between January and May of this year alone, scary what her June hours will be! And let’s not forget she is doing this and keeping up her attendance requirements for the AllStar team – WOW!”

“Works her ass off and never expects a Thank You. Such a passionate woman about her work for RCRG.”

“Thank you for all the work you have done to make our web presence better and updated. You super rock!”

“This girl has rawked the website in an undercover way and deserves major props.”

January 2009 – Skate Trooper

Skate Trooper was nominated for Rollergirl of the month for her countless hours of work helping put together our first ever Black and Blue Tie Auction.

From Skate Trooper: ” I got into derby several years ago, keeping score of  the first season at Southgate. I didn’t think I would have the opportunity at “my age” to learn something new…. Was I ever wrong! Playing derby has been interesting , frustrating, rewarding and fun! I have learned a lot about myself and every bout, even though I broke my ankle at my first practice! I love all the opportunities that being a part of RCRG had given me.”
